Providing cost-effective solutions to industrial problems
“Our mission is simply to help industry to get its powders and bulk materials to behave in the way they need them to!”
The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology is a department within the School of Engineering at the University of Greenwich Medway campus and for the past 50 years their consultants have been helping industry identify and solve its powder and particulate handling problems.
Their experts are on hand to offer
- Consultancy services including:
- Hoppers and Silos
- Pneumatic Conveying

Through their consultancy services they have helped
• Design new plant or advised on updating of existing plant,
• Advised on material blends for new products in the food and drink industries, additive manufacturing, homeware goods and renewable energy sectors,
• Tested countless materials for their handleability and flowability properties
• Advised in expert witness cases
• Advised on the aftermath of accidents – fires, destruction of silos, blow-outs
• Been at the forefront of the design and implementation of unique tools and equipment such as the widely used Brookfield Powder Flow Tester, Segregation Testers, Virtual Formulation Laboratory (VFL), Cellular Automata (CA) based modelling to predict segregation in industrial hoppers and silos, a Mechanical Surface Energy Tester to predict bulk flow properties, to name but a few
They deliver training regularly to over 200 industrial attendees from all over the world each year, updating course material as technology advances dictate.
Their premises houses an industrial-scale pilot plant containing a vast array of bulk materials handling equipment, including pneumatic and mechanical conveying, hoppers and silos, screening, blending, feeding, dosing, pressing, transport, environmental effects, control systems and all that might be found in a real plant or logistics chain.
Material characterisation – Know Your Enemy: their experts are on hand to measure every behavioural aspect of a powder or bulk material; their comprehensive facilities employ not only standard techniques but also all the latest methods of putting numbers to the behaviour of powders and bulk materials and by using these measurements in proven process models can predict what will happen to the material in your existing / proposed plant or logistics chain. Many of the tests and models have been developed at the Wolfson Centre and are available nowhere else in the world.
