RDP Electronics’ new MTS R-series synchronous serial encoder interface (SSI) position sensors are well suited to the peripheral machine tool and CNC markets. Based on the ‘next-generation’
Temposonics design platform, these magnetostrictive position sensors are durable and highly reliable.
The R-series SSI output sensor includes options for synchronised 7500kHz update rates with position accuracy down to ±20 microns. Thanks to proprietary synchronisation technology, the R-series offers an accurate position output while minimising inherent system-related delays, thereby producing smooth, precise velocity loop control. Error-checking routines ensure high immunity to shock and vibration; up to 30gav and 100g peak, respectively.
A double-shielded design provides high-level EMC immunity and the sensor is packaged in a compact IP67 housing as standard, or it is available with ATEX-approved explosion-proof and Nema 4X housing options.
Design flexibility and field adjustability of data format, position resolution, polarity and synchronisation parameters are facilitated through the use of PC interface programming software, which allows control engineers to accommodate a range of interfaces and system variations within a common location and helps to reduce sensor inventory. LED diagnostic indicators designed to reduce troubleshooting and down time, include indications for ‘normal operation’, ‘magnet not detected’, ‘missing external interrogation signals’ or ‘insufficient or out-of-range input power’.
The R-series Canbus and Profibus DP industrial network sensors are capable of sensing up to 15 magnet positions and five magnet velocities simultaneously along a single axis; this capability can be used to eliminate multiple linear or discrete sensors. This allows design simplifications and cost reductions to be achieved in applications where multiple tools or working elements are positioned along the same axis.
