Next generation system for enhanced density-driven flow technology

Energy solutions company TAQA has launched its next-generation inflow control system allowing operators to enhance reservoir performance and manage fluid production. The M4 inflow control system is in charge of undesired fluid flow, being water and gas, and avoids any binary, open or closed, that can destabilise or halt production.

Water control in light and ultra-light applications as well as enhancing gas production control whilst providing stability and flexibility in diverse reservoir conditions is possible with the M4.

Dr Mojtaba Moradi, Subsurface engineering manager of TAQA said: “With the largest portfolio of inflow control systems more than 20 years of inflow control devices expertise, the M4 Inflow Control System represents the pinnacle of our innovation so far. This new generation offers water control by gradually reducing inflow as water production increases, avoiding premature well shut in.”

Moradi added: “Its main benefit is precision control based on reservoir production. The device allows operators to maximize output without risking shutting wells in, so they can manage production continuously and efficiently, which translates into obvious financial benefits”

Advanced pilot control system which is super sensitive to density is incorporated into the M4 inflow control system. This makes it suitable for a range of oil types including ultra-light, light, medium and heavy oils. An advanced multi-phase control allows for the device platform to independently perform from the orientation in the wellbore.

‘Plug and play’ features are also offered in TAQA’s product portfolio to allow for operation with a variation of well types. Last minute capacity change and the ability to circulate to the bottom have been added to the design to make installation easier and give flexibility at the rig site.

An open operating point for oil and highly choked for water has a force field analysis to confirm by single and multi-phase flow testing. Water, oil, and gas mixtures have been tested in a multi-phase loop to evaluate and model flow behaviour for various regimes.

Oil viscosity is not a limiting factor for  the system, as it can deal with viscosities as low as 0.5cP and has been tested with water to define operations and control points at various water cuts. It has completed a qualification matrix of debris, erosion and cycle testing.
