The hunt has begun for AI transport innovations that can enhance passenger experience

UK innovation accelerator for cities and transport Connected Places Catapult has unveiled the opening of applications for its new competition: enhancing passenger experience, AI in transport. The new competition supports the government’s vision for an integrated national transport strategy.

The competition is being delivered by the Catapult Connected Places on behalf of the Department of Transport (DfT), supporting and identifying small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The SMEs can then create innovative AI-powered solutions to address key challenges in transport.

Mike Kane, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security, said: "As we embrace a new era of technology, AI is pivotal in revolutionising transport, driving smarter, safer, and more efficient systems that can benefit every corner of the country.”

Up to £89,000 will be available to innovators through the DfT’s grant funding agreement with the Catapult. Accompanying the funding will be business support, government collaboration, and networking opportunities with senior transport stakeholders.

Kane added: “Through the strong partnership between the Government and Connected Places Catapult, the AI in Transport Competition is encouraging and supporting creative ideas that will help shape the future of transport and ensure the UK remains a leader in innovation."

The competition is looking for solutions that enhance passenger experience and support the government's key priorities set out earlier in the year. These include; improving performance on the railways and driving forward rail reform, improving bus services and growing usage, transporting infrastructure to promote social mobility, delivering greener transport, and better integrating network transport.

Erika Lewis, chief executive at Connected Places Catapult, said: “AI presents a huge opportunity to improve transport for passengers, with potential benefits such as increased performance, improved social mobility, and lower emissions. If you have a solution that could harness the power of AI to make transport better for all, I encourage you to apply.”
