Advanced Materials specialist will launch EMITEC at JEC World 2025
JEC World 2025 will play host to the launch of Advanced Materials specialist James Cropper’s new EMITEC, a new tuneable conductive nonwoven solution. The solution integrates lightweight EMI shielding and electrical conductivity into a composite structure but still gives flexibility and ease of handling.
The lightest weight available is 4g/m2 and is up to 19 times lighter than traditional mesh and foil products. The mesh is engineered for precise shielding performance depending on the needs of application.
Material options include; nickel-coated carbon, copper-coated carbon, and silver-coated nylon veils. This range allows for manufacturers to fine-tune conductivity and EMI protection without overengineering, leading to optimal performance without excess weight or material cost.
This allows for EMITEC to be used in lightweight-critical industries including aerospace, electric vehicles, and high-performance electronics.
Traditional EMI shielding methods tend to require additional process steps on top of being heavier, making manufacturing more complex and leading to wasted material. By incorporating EMITEC into the composite structure these problems can be irradicated.
The greatened flexibility of EMITEC allows the material to be conformed and curved into intricate surfaces without compromising structural integrity, allowing for reduced flex fatigue with better mechanical performance along with smoother integration into advanced composite structures.
Dr. Mandy Clement, technology manager at James Cropper Advanced Materials said: “Creating functional, lightweight materials has been a critical objective for us. The market is flooded with EMI solutions and products that are over-specified and overweight, and we wanted to change that. EMITEC offers high shielding performance, over a wide frequency range (30MHz up to and beyond 40GHz) at a comparatively light weight, making it the ideal choice for EV battery enclosures, eVTOL aircraft, and next-generation electronic devices.”
James Cropper will also launch SurfaceTec to streamline composite manufacturing, enhancing surface quality and optimising resin flow. Process complexity will be reduced whilst functionality increased.
SurfaceTec is suited to industries which demand greater efficiency and cost saving and it delivers transformative advantages to sectors such as aerospace, automotive, sporting goods, industrial, and medical.
Surface porosity, microcracking, and time-intensive finishing processes often cause manufacturers problems. These can be eliminated using SurfaceTec, as the resin-rich surface finish reduces the need for secondary processing. This cuts production time and cost.
Greater resin flow and wet-out helps give faster, more consistent infusion and reduced wasted parts. This helps increase production throughput. SurfaceTec has received AS9100 accreditation and is compatible with all major composite manufacturing techniques, allowing its adoption into existing production lines.
SurfaceTec enables the production of lighter final components, helping fuel efficiency. This is useful in both aerospace and automotive. The range includes nonwovens manufactured using carbon fibre reclaimed from composites. This helps manufacturers reduce their environmental impact and reuse previous waste.
Anita Miault, global product manager at James Cropper Advanced Materials comments: “With SURFACETEC we are redefining what‘s possible in the world of composites, and especially how manufacturers should approach composite production. With shorter cycle times, lower costs, and superior performance becoming a must, companies looking to increase efficiency while maintaining high-quality standards can now integrate SURFACETEC straight into their operations.”
