Caterpillar has opened its Black Hills Engineering Design Centre, providing a firsthand look at how virtual reality and advanced visualisation are transforming equipment development and training
The new 17,000-square-foot facility will act as a hub, supporting Caterpillar teams worldwide across machines, engines, electrification and autonomy. Teams can use extended reality and digital prototypes to collaborate across continents, catch issues sooner, and move faster, reducing the need for costly builds.
The facility is home to around 100 employees, blending engineering with animation, design, and data visualisation.

Caterpillar have stated that the Rapid City team plays an essential role in its global organisation, developing tools and technologies to enable teams to design faster, make better decisions, and deliver solutions to customers more efficiently.
The investment also expands on a partnership with the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, further strengthening the company’s talent and innovation pipeline.
