A series of recent developments is highlighting the potential of Suriname’s offshore sector.
As discoveries advance toward commercial development and offshore infrastructure improves, the country is becoming a major player of the Guyana-Suriname Basin. The Guyana-Suriname Basin is one of the world’s fastest-growing petroleum provinces.
One recent indication of the transition came in July, when petroleum company TotalEnergies awarded oil field service provider Halliburton a major contract covering drilling services, well completions and digital workflows for GranMorgu.
The GranMorgu deepwater development targets first oil in 2028 and will be developed using an FPSO vessel with capacity to produce 220,000 barrels per day from the Sapakara and Krabdagu fields. GranMorgu will establish critical offshore infrastructure that can support future tie-backs and additional developments.
In addition to developments with GranMorgu, Suriname is also expanding exploration. In June, oil and gas company Petronas made a Sloanea-2 gas discovery in Block 52, adding to a series of successful wells including Caiman-1, Roystonea-1 and Roystonea-2. The discoveries are estimated to contain over one billion barrels of oil equivalent.
New geological research also identified a major oil-generating “sweet spot! Extending toward Suriname’s offshore acreage, including Block 52. The findings suggest significant exploration potential remains beyond existing discoveries.
As Guyana expands production and Suriname advances towards first oil, opportunities are emerging to develop offshore services, fabrication capacity, logistics hubs, ports LNG infrastructure and export corridors. Combined with Trinidad and Tobago’s LNG and petrochemical infrastructure, the region has potential to evolve into a globally competitive Caribbean energy corridor.
Caribbean Energy Week 2027 will host its in-country launch at the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Georgetown on September 1, 2026, bringing together government officials, investors, operators and industry stakeholders for an early look at the opportunities, priorities and partnerships that will shape the region’s energy future.
