How harnessing data can transform the UK pump industry

Digitalisation is helping to move the UK pump industry from traditional engineering into a more connected, data-driven future. With expectations around efficiency, transparency, and performance rising, the ability to capture, analyse, and act on data has emerged as a defining factor in competitiveness within the sector

For many, digitalisation is already underway, as advances in design software,  simulation tools and smart manufacturing processes are enabling more precise product development and enhanced production efficiency. However, the most significant transformation is being observed in how pumps are specified, operated, and maintained throughout their lifecycle.

A key driver of this shift is the rising emphasis on digital product information. Frameworks such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) are enabling a future where products are accompanied by electronic nameplates and Digital Product Passports. These will provide information on performance, energy use, materials, and lifecycle characteristics, accessible throughout the supply chain.

For the pump industry, this improves transparency and traceability. Specifiers and end users will be better equipped to make informed decisions, while manufacturers will need to ensure that their data is accurate, accessible, and aligned with evolving standards.

Despite this shift being a positive development that supports higher standards and better outcomes, it is not without its challenges, particularly in terms of data management, interoperability, and cybersecurity.

In addition to compliance, digital technologies are enabling new opportunities to improve performance and reliability. The integration of sensors, connectivity, and advanced analytics is facilitating real-time monitoring of pumping systems, supporting predictive maintenance and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. In waste and wastewater and energy and industrial processing, these capabilities can provide significant operational and cost benefits.

AI is also helping to optimise system performance, identify inefficiencies, and support more informed decision-making. Whether applied in design, manufacturing, or end-use applications, these tools can enhance quality and productivity.

To fully realise the benefits of digitalisation, organisations must also invest in skills, processes, and culture. This involves ensuring that employees are equipped to work with digital tools, that data is effectively managed and that systems are integrated in a way that provides meaningful insight, not complexity.

The British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) are supporting its members through this transition by offering guidance, promoting best practice, and enabling knowledge sharing across the industry. As digitalisation accelerates, collaboration will be vital to ensuring consistency, interoperability, and the development of common standards.
