IMI to equip port of Klaipeda

Klaipeda will receive regions first green hydrogen electrolyser

IMI will provide a PEM electrolyser at the port of Klaipeda, Lithuania, for a new hydrogen refuelling station. EPC will develop the site as contracted by MT Group. The project will see Klaipeda become the first port in the Baltic region to produce green hydrogen on site.

MT Group is a leading EPC contractor in critical energy and industrial infrastructure projects across Europe. The company specialises in development, engineering, and construction of renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture facilities. The company also was a founding member of Green Energy Park Global.

Green Energy Park Global aims to be one of the biggest green hydrogen producers on the planet, producing cost-competitive green hydrogen at the gigawatt scale. This will allow decarbonisation in sectors where this is not an easy task.

The port, which is the second largest EU port by tonnage, will be enabled through the IMI VIVO electrolyser to produce 500kg of green hydrogen on-site per day. This amounts to 127 tons per year whilst using an electrical input of 3MW from sustainable sources. Using hydrogen on-site also reduces the need for transportation, further helping decarbonisation efforts.

Mauro Natalini, sales & business development manager at IMI, said: “Electrolysers can provide huge benefits to the marine sector, and help to meet the stringent targets set out by the EU as part of the European Green Deal.”

Natalini added: “We’ve been working closely with both MT Group and the Seaport Authority throughout this process, with some of their technicians recently visiting our manufacturing site in Sardinia to see the electrolyser production process in person. This cements our strong bond, as we both strive to help accelerate the use of green hydrogen in the Baltic region. It also reflects our commitment to working with our clients to help deliver solutions that enable emissions reductions in key industries.”

 The European Green Deal requires ports to achieve a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050, pushing operators to make advancements towards green solutions. Both shore-side equipment and vessels can be powered using the hydrogen produced by the electrolyser.

Size, capacity, and configuration can all be customised on IMI’s VIVO electrolyser, with ranges from 100kW to 5MW, and can expand further to 20MV through modular configuration.
