A significant step towards zero-emission mining has been made through joint commitment
Equipment supplier Komatsu announced at Minexpo its new power-agnostic 930E haul truck, built on Komatsu's modular power-agnostic platform. The truck is designed to future-proof customers and allows for decarbonisation at dig sites.
Conventional diesel engines can be implemented and later switched to cleaner energy sources when needed due to the power-agnostic platform. This enables the transition towards net zero emissions operations. This allows battery technology, hydrogen fuel cell technology or a combination of systems. Changing sustainability goals can be met through the adaptable power-agnostic 930E infrastructure.
Roeck, senior manager of mining for Komatsu Europe said: “This milestone not only represents a major step forward in our decarbonisation strategy but also exemplifies our commitment to support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals. Together with Boliden, we are paving the way for a more responsible mining industry.”
Boliden’s Aitik mine will now receive the pre-production haulage truck following the exhibition. Komatsu claims the truck will be the first of its kind to undergo field testing in production at a customer mine site, one of Europe’s largest and one of the world's most productive open-pit copper mines.
The trial will last a year, taking place within the Komatsu greenhouse gas alliance framework. Kotamsu and Boliden will work closely to gather data and insights into the truck's performance and give feedback on its real-world application.
Boliden implemented Komatsu Frontrunner in 2023, an autonomous hauling system built onto 17 haul trucks at the Aitik mine. The aim was to increase productivity and asset utilisation to enable the site to meet transportation needs whilst remaining cost-competitive.
