Large Ex ec motor replacement for English refinery by Menzel

Menzel Elektromotoren has helped to replace a failed main pump motor in a Gas Explosion Zone 2 hazardous area for an English refinery. The motor manufacturer routinely handles emergency orders,  helping customers who would otherwise face months of production downtime avoid major financial losses

In this case, just one day separated the initial inquiry, quote, and order, with Menzel shipping the finished motor two weeks later.

The Berlin-based manufacturer is certified to produce large three-phase motors to ignition protection type Ex ec and maintains a large inventory of motors and accessories, enabling it to quickly implement various designs, equipment options, and cooling types in-house.

The squirrel-cage motor built for the refinery is rated for an output of 1,686kW at 3,300V, providing a speed of 2,964rpm and a torque of 5,432Nm at the rated operating point. Menzel’s explosion protection specialists labelled the motor II 3G Ex ec IIB T3 Gc. The Ex ec protection type ensures that the motor generates no ignitable sparks during normal operation and surface temperatures stay within safe limits.

The MEBKSL-type motor has a shaft height of 500mm and weighs 6.6 t, with IP55 protection and an air-to-air heat exchanger.  As the oil industry application required reverse rotation, the manufacturer reversed the fan blades, which was the most time-consuming step in the project.

Menzel also adapted the motor in every mechanical and electrical detail to help the customer install and commission it as a direct drop-in replacement, with no modifications required to the motor or to the existing installation. The MEBKSL motor series design ensures reliable, long-lasting and efficient operation.
