Laser-based wear marking from Trotec

How laser-based wear marking can help meet the Euro 7 emissions standard

The Euro 7 emissions standard requires a reduction in brake wear, which requires verifiable wear throughout the product's life cycle. This means workshops need to be able to evaluate the condition of the brake disc; however, current approaches are complex and expensive, leading OEMs and suppliers to seek alternatives.

The focus is increasingly shifting to coated grey cast iron or ceramic brake discs. Inhalable particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometres or less, PM10, emissions are up to 90% lower with carbon ceramic brake discs than with grey cast iron, with wear and particle toxicity also decreased.

Additionally, coated brake discs can be laser-marked to different depths, offering a practical solution for compliance with the Euro 7 emissions standard.

Trotec, laser technology specialists, provides an integration laser for this application, capable of producing markings with a depth of 90 µm ± 5 µm. Engraving takes less than six seconds and has a roughness of less than 10 µm, providing a clear visual inspection and a simplified way of checking the condition. There is also no requirement for dismantling or for the use of sensor technology.

An application example includes a sports car manufacturer using Trotec lasers to mark wear indicators on carbon-ceramic discs. The marking remains legible even after exposure to high temperatures, allowing for simple visual inspection during maintenance.

The customer said, "The laser-engraved wear marking is a real game changer for us; it meets the standard while saving costs and reducing complexity."
