Metrologic’s guide to planning a 3D inspection using its planner X4

Metrologic has released its advice on how to plan a 3D inspection in the metrology industry

Metrologic group has released its guide to planning a 3D inspection, with aims to maximise metrology processes. The company believes companies need to think globally and proactively grounded in planning, programming, measurement, and analysis.

Planning is required for an error free 3D measurement. The planner X4, a new Metrologic Group software suite, can prepare work in advance of measurements. This avoids any errors or interruption to the manufacturing chain whilst saving time.

An offline 3D plan is the first stage, by scheduling it directly in planner X4. Greater flexibility can be provided by planning the 3D inspection offline. Measuring equipment is not required for the planning process on the planner X4, allowing everything to be prepared in advance.

Users can select which features and points to focus on during each session, creating measurements that are to the needs of the consumer. Once the specific needs and most important features are selected, a type of alignment can be applied.

Reference elements are selected, and labels can be prepared in the planner X4. This means all orders are completed by the time the measurements are ready to be taken. Operators can not launch the measurement software.

Basic 2D data, integrated PMI data or imported planning files can be used to calculate 3D measurements. A click can add PMI data to the file. Paper plans can have PMI data added to them, using its identification number, allowing the software to quickly add them.

IGS, CATParts and other CAD data files can be used in the planner X4 to set up the 3D inspection process. Inspection process can be exported without having to worry about format.

A direct overview of measurement process to allow for checking compliance steps is possible. Reports can be created by choosing the structure and building them as desired. Drag and drop features allow images to complete the report.

Once measurements are completed, the report will fill itself out according to the framework and important points you laid down at your planning stage.
