TÜV Rheinland announces its new certification program ‘H2-read’ for state-of-the-art technology.
Global expertise in hydrogen suitability and state-of-the-art technology have been combined to create a new certification program that focuses on the safe operation and piping of hydrogen and qualifies materials for the emerging hydrogen market. Certification “H2-Ready” confirms materials are safe and suitable with pressurised hydrogen. These applications can be pipping and pressure vessels in large industrial plants.
Hydrogen can damage and penetrate materials, making them brittle and threaten entire operations. This is why certification is necessary. This gives customers piece of mind that products can contain pressurised hydrogen. The certification requires regular monitoring to keep its certification, as well as initial rigorous testing to ensure materials meet strict criteria.
Gunther Sproesser, materials expert at TÜV Rheinland said: “Our new 'H2.23' standard combines the latest technology with global expertise to test materials for hydrogen compatibility.”
Sproesser added: “In Germany, there is a lack of recognized regulations for the long-term and safe use of components with pressurized hydrogen. We are filling this gap with the ‘H2-Ready’ certification. In doing so, we are ensuring greater safety and confidence in the rapidly growing hydrogen industry,”
TÜV Rheinland has previously certified materials from companies such as “Busch + Kunz” for weld fittings which is also in “H2-ready” standards. TÜV Rheinland has been operating for 150 years as a testing services provider, ensuring highly qualified employees to conduct such testing.
