The product meets new environmental regulations
Sensor manufacturer Senseair, a Swedish subsidiary of Asahi Kasei, has launched the Sunlight R290, a gas sensor featuring a high measurement accuracy and operating range and developed for use with highly flammable refrigerants. The product was created to accomodate new environmental regulations.
Environmental regulations are changing the European market for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), forcing it to switch to natural refrigerants instead of synthetic refrigerants in an effort to become more sustainable.
In addition to its high measurement accuracy and operating range, the Sunlight R290 minimises heat generation, power consumption as well as packaging space.
The sensor has a measurement accuracy of +/-2.5% LFL (low flammable limit) and the detector itself is compact, being only 34 mm × 21 mm × 12 mm with a power consumption of 94 μA.
Regulations regarding PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and F-gases (fluorinated greenhouse gases) have reduced the use of conventional synthetic refrigerants in air conditioning, heat pumps and other HVAC systems.
Propane gas, a natural refrigerant, is considered a more sustainable resource than alternatives. However, owing to propane's highly flammable properties, a new safety detection system is required to ensure the HVAC remains safe.
The latest NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) technology has been implemented, as well as LED light source and photodiode sensors in the Sunlight R290. These technologies generate minimal heat, allowing it to work with propane gas.
The IEC 60335-2-40 requires stringent leak detection requirements and safety standards. These regulatory requirements are met as the Sunlight R290 technology is less affected by vibrations or interfering gases, allowing for robust and reliable measurements.
Challenging environments do not cause issues to the Sunlight R290, as it can operate in temperature ranges of -40°C to 70°C as well as a relative humidity (RH) range of 0 to 95. It can be applied across a range of applications, including air conditioning, heat pumps, dehumidifiers and control panel coolers.
Shipments of the sensor are expected to begin in September 2024.
