Toshiba announced power drive for space-constrained brushless DC applications
Toshiba has announced a new intelligent power device (IPD) for space-constrained brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive applications. The devices are used in air conditioners, air purifiers and pumps.
The maximum output current 3A has been increased in the new IPD (TPD4165K), this is in comparison to the 2A rating of Toshiba’s existing products. This is true of supported equipment and can be used in higher-power applications. The device is sine-wave drive suitable.
Voltage can vary significantly in regions where this device could be implemented, therefore the device has an absolute max voltage rating (VBB) of 600V to enhance long-term reliability, bringing a 20% increase compared to previous Toshiba products.
The dimensions of the new device measure 32.8 x 13.5 x 3.525mm, making it 21% smaller than the DIP26 package used in previous Toshiba products.
The IPD's design allows for it to be used in challenging space-constrained applications. The device's new housing supports either a three-shunt or single-shunt resistor circuit for current sensing.
The device also features a range of safety features that includes over-current, under-voltage and thermal shutdown. On top of this, an external signal can be added to the SD pin to control output stage behaviour. The status of the safety conditions is provided by the DIAG output pin.
Designers can view the reference data and design for both the sensorless BLDC motor drive and Toshiba's TMPM374FWUG on the company's website.
