New design increases power density, rigidity, and application flexibility
Wolong Electric America, a global manufacturer of industrial motors for demanding applications, has expanded its Quantum motor platform with the Quantum 500 Frame Medium Voltage Motor. The motor has been created to replace a legacy design, providing enhanced power density, improved structural rigidity, and greater installation flexibility
The Quantum 500 is suitable for a range of industries and applications, including mining, pumping systems, oil and gas, petrochemical processing, and compression equipment. Modernising the platform has enabled Wolong Electric America to align frame sizes, ratings, and footprints with current industry standards, allowing the Quantum 500 to operate as a drop-in replacement for both existing Wolong Electric America installations.
The Quantum 500 shifts the motor’s natural frequency at least 15% away from the operating range, decreasing the risk of resonance under a variety of mounting conditions. This was accomplished through increased frame and end-shield stiffness, a redesigned stator-to-frame interface, and a move from a single-piece core to an interconnected multi-plate core for enhanced support and vibration control.
The Quantum 500 also features a larger shaft diameter, expanded to 6.8 inches, along with reduced bearing centre distances. These structural improvements increase shaft stiffness, enabling the motor to perform reliably on rigid bases, flexible skids, and other installation configurations.
The motor is fully bidirectional, with a conduit box orientation that can be changed in the field from F1 to F2 without requiring shop rework, reducing downtime and simplifying maintenance. Select frame sizes are available with deep flange designs to support cantilever mounting, enabling use in applications that require footless motor configurations.
Developed for medium-voltage operations below 7kV, the Quantum 500 is available in WPI and WPII enclosures and supports a wide horsepower range across multiple pole configurations. Bearing systems are engineered to meet industry guidelines, with calculated bearing life surpassing 100,000 hours, while the motor insulation system supports an expected service life up to 30 years under normal operating conditions.
