Artec Spider II offers handheld 3D scanning capabilities
3D scanning company Artec 3D has announced its new 3D scanner, Artec Spider II. The device is designed to capture complex objects, picking up significant levels of detail. Scans can be completed in high resolution and full colour, making the scanner well-fitted for applications requiring high attention to detail.
The device can be used for in-depth reserve engineering as well as the creation of hyper-realistic CGI. The company hopes to set out a new standard in resolution and detail capture.
Art Yukhin, CEO and president of Artec 3D said: “With Spider II, we’ve made a significant breakthrough, honing our original concept to deliver faster, easier, more realistic results. Now, we are bringing an unmatched level of resolution and detail to diverse fields,”
Improvements to depth and field of view as well as capture speed and resolution have been built on from the previous Artec Space Spider to create the new Spider II scanner. A high level of geometry and texture data is gathered via the use of blue-light technology.
Blue-light technology allows for the Spider II to capture detail in 0.05mm resolution. This allows the digitisation of all information, regardless of how big or small the product being scanned is.
Yukhin added: “Spider II is ideal for capturing anything from priceless artefacts to vital forensic clues – wherever fine detail is required.”
A FPS rate of 30 allows the Spider II to gather data four times as fast as previous models, whilst also doubling its capture zone to 1,800 cm³. All details are captured even with this larger capture zone, ensuring complex geometrics and sharp edges are captured without error.
The Spider II can be set up and become operational very quickly due to its intuitive and straightforward design. Only a single click is required to start scanning models into the device. It is designed for mobility with its 950g weight and target-free functionality.
Larger creations, such as lifelike 3D models can be created from the small-to-medium-sized scans using the Spider II. An application of this capability would be the design industry, as the scaling and colour capture components allow designers to create life-size 3D models.
There are also medical applications of the scanner, as it is able to gather data for body parts such as ears, wrinkles and fingerprints. This data can be used in patient monitoring as well as device customisation.
Meshes are installed into the Spider II for reverse engineering, this is applicable to industries where fine tolerances are required, such as manufacturing and automotive. These features allow engineers to scan through complex geometries, leaving out no features in reliable scan-to-CAD comparisons.
