Hexagon's accelerating in aerospace event, held at the home of Oracle Red Bull Racing, Red Bull Technology Campus in Milton Keynes, on September 10, highlighted key challenges faced by the aerospace industry and the actions needed to overcome them
Guests of the event experienced several talks, the first of which was given by Jan Klingen, vice president EMEA North at Hexagon and Oliver Glimmerveen, technical partnerships coordinator at Red Bull. The talk explored insights into high-performance engineering and team strategy, with Glimmerveen advocating for a "fail fast, learn faster" approach.
This was followed by a Hexagon masterclass, exploring three strategies for success given by Ingo Lindner, senior director of strategic intelligence at Hexagon, and Kai Winter, business enablement manager at Hexagon.
The masterclass focused on enhancing productivity and quality in aerospace. The three strategies were:
- Quality drives productivity, "measure everything and measure everywhere", ensuring there is no room for failure
- Virtualisation can minimise risks and costs by using metrology data to enable virtualisation to achieve 'right-first-time' and so a faster market
- Model-based ecosystem as envelope storing and analysing the data, strengthening partnerships, verticalising the supply chain, and converging IT/OT
After the masterclass, a panel discussion on aerospace manufacturing saw industry experts discuss strategies, technologies and practices that can achieve precision and excellence in aerospace production.
The panel was hosted by Ed Gould and featured Mark Foden, head of quality control at Red Bull, Andrew Francis, technology director of GKN Aerospace, Steve Beasley, CEO and founder of Metrology Engineering Services, and Riana Rarimamonjy, senior director of EMEA Aerospace accounts, Hexagon.
In addition to industry discussions, Hexagon unveiled Maestro and ATS800. Maestro is a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) engineered to meet the productivity demands of modern manufacturing. Created to fill the global skills gap and increase quality requirements.
The ATS800 combines long-range laser scanning with real-time tracking and automation readiness to reduce inspection times. Designed to meet the demands of faster aircraft production and labour shortages, the ATS800 enables measurements from up to 40 metres away.
