IDTechEx report finds Micro EVs to become $90 billion market by 2046

A new report from IDTechEx reveals changes coming to the micro EV industry over the next 20 years

A new report from IDTechEx, Micro EVs 2026-2046: Electric Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Microcars, provides a 20-year forecast into key global markets, highlighting the transformation that is coming to the industry

Micro EVs are compact electric vehicles, including electric two-wheelers like mopeds or scooters, three-wheelers, and microcars. They are small and can navigate dense urban areas seamlessly,  designed for short trips in and around city centres at 80km/h or less.

The demand for micro EVs is growing rapidly, particularly in Asian markets such as China and India, where two- and three-wheelers have already become an integral part of the mobility culture, offering low-cost, everyday transportation. 

 

In smaller markets like Europe and the US, the leading cause for popularity is how well-suited the micro EVs are for cities, as they are less impacted by traffic congestion, have reduced parking requirements, and are cheaper than a traditional passenger car.

 

SCALE AND GROWTH

 

IDTechEx found that micro EVs made up over 25% of all small vehicles sold in 2024, mainly due to governments worldwide being proactive in offering incentives for micro EV sales, aiming to encourage customers to choose an electric model over a combustion one.

 

The fast-growing nature of the industry has led to the prediction that micro EVs will become more than a $90 billion market by 2046.

 

BATTERY SHIFTS

 

Lithium-ion batteries are set to play a key role in the future of micro EVs, taking over from lead-acid. Lead-acid batteries drove the development of the industry before lithium-ion technology matured, and are still used for their low price and high availability.

 

The report finds that lithium-ion batteries will soon become the dominant battery as their prices are lowering, have higher energy density, longer life cycles and less harmful impacts on the environment.

 

Governments are also driving this shift by making lead-acid batteries ineligible for grants, encouraging the use of lithium-ion instead.

 

With lithium-ion driven micro EVs becoming more cost competitive each year, more Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) globally are looking to embrace the technology.

 

Micro EVs are becoming less of a niche and more of a staple in urban transport worldwide. The long-term forecast from IDTechEx's report highlights that micro EVs will be a sustained market growth, not a passing trend.
