Kollmorgen launches new servo motors for hazardous locations

For ATEX and IECEx Zones 2 and 22

Kollmorgen has launched a new servo motor for use in hazardous locations, including ATEX and IECEx certifications for Zones 2 and 22. Distributed in the UK by INMOCO, the new Kollmorgen AKME Series servo motors are based on the performance of Kollmorgen’s existing AKM servo motors

Providing high torque density, responsiveness, and precision for applications that could be exposed to ignitable gases or dusts, the new AKME servo motors are available in a range of voltage ratings and feedback options.

ATEX is the EU standard for equipment used in exposive atmospheres, whereas IECEx is the global standard, and both certifications use the same Zone classifications. By introducing Zone 2 and 22 servo motors, end users and OEMs can meet hazardous-location requirements without specifying more Zone 1 and Zone 0 servo motors when their increased protection may not be necessary.

Meeting Zone 2 classification means the motor can operate where flammable gases or vapours may appear under abnormal conditions. The Kollmorgen AKME Series servo motor can prevent sparks, hot surfaces, or failures that could ignite gas.

The servo motor can also operate in environments where combustible dust may occasionally be present, as it meets Zone 22 requirements. The motor prevents dust ignition, including via enclosure or surface temperature limits.

Meeting ATEX and IECEx Zone 2 and Zone 22 certifications enables the AMKE servo motors to be used in applications across pharmaceutical production, food processing, grain elevators, industrial paint booths, and other settings where combustible gases or dusts may be present. The motors also meet IP64 protection, meaning they are dust-tight and prevent moisture ingress.

Engineered for continuous torque applications, the AKME servo motors can generate between 0.37Nm and 50.4Nm and operate up to 5,000rpm. The motors are available in IEC frame sizes two to seven, spanning 54mm to 188mm, and can be powered by voltages including 48 and 75Vdc, and 120, 240 or 400Vac.

The AKME servo motors can support a variety of feedback options, including single- and dual-connector devices, such as resolver, SFD-M, ComCoder, EnDat, Hiperface, and BiSS B. In control, the motors are matched with Kollmorgen’s AKD, AKD2G, or Kollmorgen Essentials servo drives, and this combination operates with standard Kollmorgen servo motor cables ranging from 1m to 25m.
