In modern industrial facilities, precise liquid flow measurement is critical for operational efficiency, process stability, and cost control, but inline flowmeters often present significant operational challenges
Additionally, inline installation increases the risk of fluid leakage, pressure drops, and sensor fouling. To eliminate these operational drawbacks, engineers and maintenance teams increasingly rely on non-invasive clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters.
The PCE-TDS 200 from PCE Instruments provides a portable, highly accurate, non-destructive solution for measuring fluid flow from the outside of closed pipe systems without interrupting production.
The PCE-TDS 200 from PCE Instruments operates on the proven transit-time ultrasonic difference method. In this setup, two transducers attach directly to the pipe’s exterior surface using clamping fixtures and coupling gel.
These transducers alternate transmitting and recieving high-frequency acoustic signals through the flowing liquid. Sound waves travelling downstream with the fluid flow arrive faster at the recieving transducer, while sound waves travelling upstream against the flow take longer to travel.
The PCE-TDS 200’s internal microprocessor measures this time difference with extreme precision. Combined with user-entered pipe parameters, such as external diameter, wall thickness, and material composition, the device calculates the average velocity, current volumetric flow rate, and total accumulated volume.
As the clamp-on sensors never come into direct contact with the internal fluid, the system offers several engineering advantages over conventional inline measurement tools. The non-contact design prevents pressure loss in the piping network, preserving pumping energy and maintaining stable process conditions.
Additionally, it completely avoids media contamination, making the PCE-TDS 200 suitable for ultra-pure water, pharmaceuticals, hygienic food manufacturing, and aggressive chemicals such as acids and alkalis. It eliminates wear and tear from abrasive slurries or corrosive liquids on internal sensing elements, extending system longevity and reducing maintenance demands.
Industrial piping networks feature diverse materials, pipe sizes, and operating media. The PCE-TDS 200 accommodates these variations with extensive material compatibility, functioning effectively on virtually all sound-conducting pipes, including stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron, copper, PVC, and polyethylene.
Depending on the chosen transducer combination, the PCE-TDS 200 series measures pipe diameters from small lines at DN 15 to large-scale industrial distribution networks up to DN 6000. It measures clean to slightly turbid homogeneous liquids with low gas and particle content, covering water, thermal oils, hydraulic fluids, and solvents across medium temperatures from -30°C up to +160°C.
Modern industrial monitoring requires comprehensive data collection for auditing, energy management, and quality control. The PCE-TDS 200 features an integrated multi-functional data logger that records real-time measurements at customisable sampling intervals. Recorded data can be exported to a computer via USB interface for further analysis, reporting, and process optimisation.
In configurations with temperature sensors, the device functions as a portable thermal energy meter. By measuring supply and return temperatures alongside flow rates, it calculates instantaneous thermal power output and total energy consumption in heating or cooling circuits, making it suitable for energy auditors, commissioning engineers, and facility managers.
The PCE-TDS 200 delivers a velocity measurement range of ±0.00 to ±30 m/s with a resolution of 0.0001m/s and high accuracy across diverse industrial setups. Powered by a high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery, it supports extended mobile operation in remote plant environments. The lightweight handheld unit features a clear, backlit graphic display, intuitive menu navigation, and robust housing designed for demanding industrial conditions.
The PCE-TDS 200 supports key engineering applications across sectors. Maintenance personnel use it for fast troubleshooting, spot-checking fixed flow instruments, and verifying pump performance without operational shutdowns. In HVAC and building automation, it enables hydraulic balancing, heat exchanger efficiency verification, and data centre cooling management. Process engineers rely on it for dose monitoring, raw water distribution tracking, and leak detection in complex piping networks.
The PCE-TDS 200 ultrasonic flow meter provides an efficient, portable, non-destructive tool for fluid and energy management. By eliminating pipe modifications, installation delays, and process interruptions, it improves system reliability while reducing total operational costs across modern industrial plants.
