LK Metrology, a supplier of portable measuring arms and a manufacturer of coordinate measuring machines and laser scanners, has integrated Focus 2025 R1, a point cloud inspection software, into its software suite
Developed to align with other products in the company's range, the 3D digital inspection software provides users with part-to-CAD comparisons and advanced feature inspection, and features the laser scanner driver NM API 5.0 R1 installer.
The software has been created to drive LK Metrology's handheld H120 laser scanner and Freedom measuring arms. The GUI provides direct access to the most frequently used functions, and the taskbar leads users through each stage of an inspection job. The process encompasses nominal part definition, featuring creation and extraction, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, handheld measurement through scanning and probing, alignment of the measured part and inspection reporting.
Various CAD formats are supported by Focus, from neutral standards like STEP and IGES to native formats such as CATIA, Crea, NX, SolidWorks, ACIS, VDA-FS and Parasolid. By accommodating a range of formats, the software allows a flow of information across design, manufacturing and quality functions.
Integrated data acquisition, processing, and reporting are provided, with access to workflow selection, customisation, and automation to facilitate setup and job execution.
Results, including deviation analysis data, are presented in graphical or tabular reports, so they are easy to interpret and share with operators, managers and suppliers.
Further enhancements include the software's ability to analyse virtually unlimited point clouds, along with comprehensive point cloud tools such as the Fuse algorithm, which automatically generates polygon meshes using scanner metadata.
Geometric elements, from simple holes and slots to complex fir-tree and T-stud features, are automatically identified and analysed by feature detection routines. The software also supports tactile probing and a leapfrog function to enable inspection of large parts by moving the measuring device.
The virtual assembly function enables digital copies of reference parts to be used when building an assembly with a CAD model or point cloud data.
A key benefit of Focus is automation, incorporating standard functionality to support non-stop execution of repetitive inspection tasks. Macro-based recording of actions does not require any specific programming skills and automates the entire inspection workflow.
The software offers a range of functionalities for specialised applications. For instance, the Airfoil Inspection module enables precise calculations and multiple aerofoil profile measurements from cross-sections, generating dedicated reports.
