French cleantech company looks to help tackle CO2 emissions in sector

French cleantech firm Revcoo has unveiled its latest innovation to reduce carbon emissions at factory sites, using carbon capture technology. The solution uses CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage) which captures carbon dioxide emissions, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere.

Revcoo, a start-up, has created the CarbonCloud solution, capturing fumes produced by factories and separating the CO2 from other gases by first freezing it, and then processing it in either liquid of gas form. After this, the Carbon Dioxide is containerised and ready for other use or storage.

The company develops, manufacturers, and installs the technology on sites of industrial carbon dioxide emitters, both in France and internationally. Traditional technologies uses chemical solvents, ammonia-derived compounds, which degrade and need to be renewed. CarbonCloud uses non-toxic, solvent-free, waste-free, water-frree, and 100% electric processes instead.

CarbonCloud is a unique cryogenics solution due to turning the carbon dioxide into a usable form. It is ideally suited to incompressible emissions, being where emissions can not be eliminated regardless of fuel source. This is common for plants, lime production, and glassworks.

Hugo Lucas, president and founder of Revcoo, said: “Our goal is to help shape the balance of tomorrow’s world, through a solution that is both accessible and simple for manufacturers. Revcoo aims to accelerate carbon capture in France and internationally, in anticipation of higher environmental penalties associated with CO₂ emissions. The industrial sector has to change: we aim to contribute in our own way by rolling out a solution to maintain sustainable growth, while reducing its impact on the environment. Our role is to act as a catalyst, beginning a process of mass decarbonisation.”

The technology can also be deployed in ‘biogenic’ carbon dioxide emissions applications. This involves green fuels, such as wood or organic waste, or incinerators and biomass boilers.

As part of the EUs environmental goals, Revcoo wants to help towards the net zero by 2050 target and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% before 2030. This will require large scale decarbonisation efforts across the continent to achieve, especially the industrial sector which accounts for 30% of global emissions.

The EU is aiming to achieve this via regulatory measures and incentivising innovation, combining both the carrot and the stick.
