The battery manufacturer will co-create the D-Sea underwater battery pack
Volklec, a UK battery manufacturer, has expanded into the global underwater construction and defence industry through a multi-million-pound power system development project with Walker Subsea, an offshore technology specialist
The agreement will see the companies co-create a first-to-market solution, the D-Sea underwater battery pack, which will be powered by Volklec's 21700-5000mAh energy cells. The D-Sea is thought to provide a step forward in subsea vehicle autonomy, as it will feature onboard energy storage for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), which are currently limited by their reliance on power from support vessels.
Underwater battery power is a significant enabling technology for the construction of offshore renewable energy sites and the defence of vital ocean infrastructure, in a global market valued at $5.9bn.

The project is scheduled for underwater trials in Q1 2026.
