ASTM robotics committee proposes mobile manipulator standard

New practice will aid measurements of performance through disturbance

ASTM International robotics, automation, and autonomous systems committee, F45, has put forward a new standard practise on including workpiece disturbances in mobile manipulators. WK92144 is responsible for the design of this new standard.

The new guidelines for documenting disturbance behaviour using an example apparatus for testing will be provided by WK92144. ASTM International member Omar Aboul-Enein believes factors such as passing heavy equipment can unsettle automated arms working in unstructured manufacturing environments.

Enein believes it is critical to possess the means to accurately measure performance of infrastructure because of this.

Enein said: “Many applications of mobile manipulators require high degree of position and orientation accuracy and repeatability. The aerospace, energy, and transportation sectors often require prototyping, assembling, and surfacing large-scale components, which have curved and complex shapes.”

The practise will be helpful for manufacturers, integrators, and end-users of mobile manipulators, according to Enein.
