BorgWarner to supply eFan system for global OEM’s heavy-duty BEV trucks from 2027

BorgWarner’s eFan is both highly versatile and adaptable, being able to operate in a variety of conditions whilst offering best-in-class performance for noise, vibrations and harshness.

BorgWarner has signed its most prolific contract in the North American eFan market. The eFan will be used in a series of heavy-duty battery electric vehicles (EVs) produced by an OEM, starting in Q4 of 2027.

Dr. Volker Weng, vice president of BorgWarner Inc. and president and general manager, Turbos and Thermal Technologies said: “As the industry continues to put a heavy focus on reducing emissions, the need for high performing power electronic components is essential.”

BorgWarner’s eFan can reach up to 10kW in power and 40Nm torque. It contains three pieces in its structure, being a fan, e-motor and an integrated high-voltage inverter.

The eFan can be used for a wide range of operating temperatures, allowing for minus 40°C conditions and up to 80°C. This is due to the system's low-power and high-power segments. Customers can scale and change components of the eFan to best suit their systems and individual requirements.

Even when operating at speeds less than 3,000RPM, the eFans can still operate at full performance, making their eFans best-in-class for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Being quieter suits sensitive vehicle scenarios such as battery charging.

Weng added: “Our sophisticated and efficient eFan system has the scalability to meet specific customer requirements, with a wide voltage range and liquid-cooling for long-term reliability. The eFan system is adaptable and inclusive to a wide range of systems, as it can operate at 550V to 850V. This makes it compatible with a variety of high-voltage commercial vehicles electric systems. The eFan’s internal e-motor and power electronics are liquid-cooled, allowing for compactness in its design. This also ensures long-term reliability of the eFan.

Customers can personalise interfaces and connectors to choose specific aspects of system parts. Customers can choose from external or integrated inverters as well as open or ring fans.

This new innovation in eFan technology offers solutions which are applicable to many different heavy-duty commercial applications, including both BEVs and fuel cell EVs.
