Direct lithium extraction technology to be used in Argentina

The Catamarca Ministry of Mining has issued the Environmental Impact Declaration for the Kachi Lithium Brine project in Catamarco Province, Argentina.

Kachi is being developed by Lake Resources in partnership with Lilac Solutions, a direct lithium extraction tech company, using Lilac IX technology.

“The DIA is a defining milestone for Kachi and for Lilac’s technology,” said Lilac CEO Raef Sully. “It’s a strong validation of our ion exchange technology and our ability to meet the most rigorous environmental standards in the region.

The declaration positions Kachi as one of the few fully permitted, large-scale lithium brine projects. Lilac’s process uses minimal land, delivering low water consumption and high returns of the extracted brine directly to the reservoir.

Kachi is located on the Salar de Carachi Pampa and hosts a lithium resource estimated at 11.1m tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, according to Lake Resources’ June 2025 estimate.

Phase 1 targets production of 25,000t per annum LCE over a 25-year mine life. That is enough lithium to supply batteries for about 550,000 electric vehicles per year and 14m vehicles over the life of the project. The project is designed to produce battery grade lithium carbonate on site without the need for further refining or processing.

Currently, Kachi is advancing into the Front End Engineering and Design phase, which includes further engineering planning and commercial activities.
