Digital value controls suitable for use in Alaskan pipelines
IMI is introducing its 15 QuickTrak Digital Valve Control System and Positioners for use across Alaska in one of the world’s largest pipelines, stretching over 1,287km. The development aids both safety and efficiency for critical infrastructure.
QuickTrak features pneumatic digital valve control technology, using both a microprocessor-based control system and an integrated valve positioner. The end result is the same performance and control as a hydraulic system but without the storage and environment requirements.
The system can work in extreme weather conditions, with suitable temperature ranges of –40°C to 70°C. Sequential layers of safety have been installed through the integrated software, firmware, and mechanical systems.
A probe, using Magneto strictive linear position transducers located within the actuator stem, allows the system to have fast and accurate control feedback. Along with this, a custom-designed actuator featuring larger ports allowing the feedback loop is used.
Patrick Deane, business development director at IMI, said: “Effective monitoring is critical to ensuring the safety and efficiency of pipelines, which is why we approach it with the utmost seriousness. The QuickTrak Digital Valve Control System represents a significant innovation in the energy infrastructure sector and underscores IMI’s commitment to advancing the digitisation of the oil and gas industry.”
The system has attained ATEX, IECEx, CSA, and UL certification, making it well suited to deployment in demanding operating conditions. A digital control, using a closed-loop system, which is based on the value and spool position, is used to control the stepper motor. It adjusts the actuator’s chamber pressure to achieve the required valve position.
Deane added: “Building trust and showcasing expertise are essential to the success of innovative products like the QuickTrak systems. These new controllers deliver significant benefits, including enhanced performance, reduced maintenance, and exceptional reliability. Their deployment in Alaska is a testament to the dedication, ingenuity, and engineering excellence of our team, as well as the collaborative effort that brought this project to life.”
