Juniper Systems releases Alta Rugged tablet

Electronics manufacturer Juniper Systems has unveiled the new Alta Rugged tablet, powered by Android and designed for use in demanding environments such as mining and oil and gas.

The tablet is useful for field data collection, GIS mapping, equipment maintenance tracking and general site management.

“Alta is designed to work where you work. It was carefully matched to modern uses without blindly adding specs or features that increase cost or use more power but do not improve the user experience,” said Alta product manager Tim Royer.

The new model features a lean design, the latest premium processer, a brighter 8in display, hot-swappable batteries with an optional extended battery and an add-on passive EMR stylus.

AI capabilities and machine learning models run directly on the device rather than on remote cloud servicers, giving users rapid data analysis and enhanced security.

“Alta is AI-enabled to work with apps that use object detection, speech recognition and audio classification, and some generative AI. We’ve specifically taken advantage of the AI capabilities to enhance and automate the touchscreen behaviour,” said Royer.

According to Royer, Alta also has the unique ability “to securely enable and disable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Cellular, NFC, GPS, or all radios without hardware changes, and without custom operating systems,” which can be critical for users in sensitive or restricted areas.
