SECO targets industrial Edge AI with Dragonwing-based SMARC module

The SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8

SECO has opened priority access to early samples of its new SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 system-on-module (SoM), designed to help OEMs transition edge AI applications from Arduino prototyping platforms to production-oriented industrial systems.

Developed through SECO’s collaboration with Arduino and Qualcomm Technologies, the SMARC Rel. 2.1.1 module is based on the Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ8 Series and is aimed at applications including AI-enabled robotics, smart machines, industrial vision, human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and machine control.

“The transition from prototype to production is where many Edge AI projects lose momentum,” said Lorenzo Veltroni, chief product and marketing officer at SECO. “With SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8, we are helping OEMs bridge that gap, enabling a seamless path from rapid prototyping with Arduino VENTUNO Q to industrial-scale deployment. By combining the performance of Dragonwing technology with SECO’s expertise in industrial platforms, the SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 empowers customers to accelerate innovation while ensuring reliability, lifecycle support, and long-term availability. The SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 reflects SECO’s role as a trusted industrial partner for companies looking to scale AI-enabled products from concept to production.”

The platform is intended to address a key challenge in industrial Edge AI development: retaining software and development work when moving from rapid prototyping to hardware designed for long-term deployment. Developers can validate applications using Arduino VENTUNO Q and Arduino App Lab before porting them to the SECO module.

The SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8 is based on the Dragonwing IQ-8275 processor, with AI acceleration configurations of up to 40 TOPS. It supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5/LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage. Connectivity includes Gigabit and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe Gen4, MIPI-CSI and CAN-FD.

Marcello Majonchi, chief product officer at Arduino, Qualcomm Technologies, said: “One of the most powerful things we can do for the maker and engineering community is make sure that the journey from idea to industrial product is uninterrupted. With the SECO SOM-SMARC-Dragonwing-IQ8, that path becomes real: developers can prototype on Arduino VENTUNO Q, validate their AI applications, and step directly into a production-grade architecture without throwing away the work, the code, or the ecosystem they already know.”

SECO is also providing Clea OS support, incorporating lifecycle management, secure over-the-air updates, remote troubleshooting and AI workflow deployment capabilities.

Eric Mazzoleni, VP, industrial, IoT and robotics europe at Qualcomm Germany, added: “Simplifying and streamlining the development transition from Arduino VENTUNO Q to SECO’s industrial SOM is important because it helps turn developer innovation into scalable industrial products, in a faster and reliable manner.”

Limited early samples will be available for selected customer and partner evaluations
