VoltaSplit reduces carbon dioxide emission by up to 90%, enabling a smooth transition to renewable energy
Engineering and manufacturing firm Sulzer has launched VoltaSplit, an electrified distillation solution that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%.
VoltaSplit exclusively uses electricity to run distillation units, reducing energy requirements up to 20 times more than conventional solutions such as electric boilers.
“We’re proud to offer a solution that drives efficiency while actively contributing to the reduction of global emissions, both of which are key concerns for industrial operators today,” said Sulzer’s executive chairwoman Suzanne Thoma.
“With the launch of VoltaSplit, we aim to speed up the global adoption of transformative technology that enables essential industries to produce at lower costs while saving on GHG emissions.”
The reduction of global carbon dioxide emissions enables a smooth transition to renewable energy once available, without installing new infrastructure.
Distillation is a vital process in many industries, but it is characterised by high energy consumption. Traditional distillation systems often rely on on-site steam boilers powered by carbon-intensive fossil fuels such as coal to heat the water.
This contributes to greenhouse gas emissions of the refinery and chemical complexes, as well as to the carbon footprint of fuels, solvents and chemical products.
Sulzer’s solution could help to change the energy-eating characterisation of distillation and increase its efficiency.
Just last month, Sulzer installed the world’s first large-scale carbon capture operation at a coal-fuelled plant in Canada.
The plant will begin using Sulzer’s mellapakCC and mellatech technology in 2025 to maximise the carbon captured at the lowest specific pressure drop.
