IDTechEx has released the report: Drones Market 2026-2036: Technologies, Markets, and Opportunities

A newly released report from IDTechEx, titled “Drones Market 2026-2036: Technologies, Markets, and Opportunities,” states that the global drone market, including commercial, consumer, and defense platforms, is predicted to grow from $69 billion in 2026 to $147.8 billion by 2036, corresponding to a 7.9% CAGR

The growth is driven by increased commercial adoption, expanding regulatory approval pathways, and the emergence of autonomous, data-driven operations across industries. Defence remains the most significant revenue contributor; however, the commercial sector is experiencing the fastest structural transformation, supported by falling hardware costs, increasingly sophisticated sensor payloads, and clearer regulations.

Commercial drone unit shipments are expected to surpass nine million annually by 2036, emphasising the market’s move from isolated deployments to scalable, repeatable workflows.

Agriculture has entered the era of digital farming, notably in China, the US, and Southeast Asia. By 2025, over 30% of large farms globally are predicted to use drones for tasks such as seeding, crop monitoring, and spraying. Multirotor drones dominate today's landscape, but fixed-wing and hybrid VTOL platforms are gaining ground in large-area mapping and long-range autonomous missions.

The inspection and maintenance of powerlines, pipelines, wind turbines, and industrial assets is becoming the fastest-growing commercial segment. Equipped with LiDAR, AI defect recognition, and thermal cameras, drones are displacing hazardous manual inspections. From 2025, operators are expected to adopt automated inspection workflows, including drone-in-a-box systems and cloud-based analytics, with the segment predicted to account for more than 25% of commercial revenue by 2030.

Delivery drones are also shifting from experimental trials to regional commercialisation. Companies in the US, Europe, and China are expanding last-mile and mid-range logistics routes, supported by technology improvements in automated loading, cold-chain transport, and U-space/UTM integration.

Public safety and security remain strong, with drones supporting traffic monitoring, search and rescue, surveillance, and emergency response. Meanwhile, the defense sector continues to dominate overall market revenue, accelerated by the demand for reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, and tactical platforms.

Global drone regulation is converging toward harmonised, risk-based frameworks. The US, EU, UK, and China have established clearer pathways for commercial operations, particularly BVLOS, which will be pivotal to automated inspection networks and long-range logistics. Regulatory themes inlcude mandatory registration and pilot certification, altitude limitations around 120m, stricter rules for BVLOS and operations over people, and digital authorisation systems to manage airspace access.

Sensor proliferation is also transforming drone payload design. Commercial drone shipments are expected to grow 2.3x between 2025 and 2036, while sensor shipments are expected to increase 4x. By 2036, several industrial drones are forecast to integrate 10-15 sensors per platform, including multi-camera vision systems, ultrasonic modules, high-performance LiDAR and radar, barometric altimeters, and redundant IMUs for high-reliability missions. This rise in sensing capability allows for improved autonomy, safety, and more complex mission profiles across commercial sectors.
